The purple crystal, Amethyst, has been esteemed through the ages for its legendary power to soothe the mind and emotions. This semi-precious stone fittingly lends its name to this pretty purple bougainvillea variety which makes a stunning show with its profusion of coloured bracts during its summer flowering season.
In hot countries bougainvilleas bloom just about all year round, but here in the UK they keep their flowers in check during the cold winter months, rewarding growers with a superb display from spring through to early autumn. When the first frosts set in bougainvillea amethyst needs to be protected in a heated greenhouse or conservatory to over-winter.
Bougainvillea amethyst features the characteristic bougainvillea dense, intensely green foliage and thorns on woody vine stems, requiring trellis support or careful training into a shrub or standard configuration. It prefers full sun, and when outdoors will flower best against a warm wall or on a sunny patio.
Medium Bracts. Keep in good light above 2°C. Deciduous under 2°C
